2026 Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Visitor Guide

An independent Manhattan departure strategy.

Every December, residents of Dyker Heights transform their Brooklyn neighborhood with elaborate Christmas lights, animated figures and larger-than-life holiday displays. The most famous decorations are generally concentrated between 11th and 13th Avenues and 83rd and 86th Streets, although individual displays vary from year to year. This guide explains the practical options for reaching Dyker Heights and introduces a tour operated by our professional colleagues Jen and Kel.Visitors traveling independently commonly take the D train to 79th Street and walk approximately 15–20 minutes to the decorated area. Travel time and walking conditions vary, so check current subway service and the weather before leaving Manhattan.Taxis and rideshare vehicles are another option, but traffic can become extremely congested during peak viewing hours. Drivers may not be able to stop directly beside the most popular displays, and return fares can rise during periods of high demand.A guided minibus tour offers round-trip transportation from Manhattan and removes much of the route planning. It does not eliminate December traffic, but it can provide a warmer and more organized way to reach the neighborhood.

  • Peak Viewing Times: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM daily (residents turn off the displays late to conserve power).

  • The Best Blocks: 84th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues holds the most famous, over-the-top displays.

  • The Subway Reality: The nearest train is the D Train at 79th St, requiring an uphill, 15-minute winter walk.

  • The Recommended Play: Secure a round-trip Manhattan minibus shuttle ticket to guarantee a heated seat, a local guide, and zero transit stress. Avoid 55+ seat coaches unless there are 2 or more guides.
